The “Chicken Jockey” Movie

by | May 10, 2025 | Favorites

A movie made for Millennials. It’s our time! Alright, let’s get one thing straight: turning Minecraft, a game best described as “digital Legos with zombies”, into a full-blown movie sounds like the setup to a punchline. But surprise! The Minecraft Movie doesn’t just survive — it digs, builds, and redstones its way into something pretty dang enjoyable.

The Plot? Sure, There’s a Plot.

Is it Shakespeare? No. But have you seen Shakespeare try to fight Endermen with a diamond sword? Didn’t think so. The storyline is simple enough to follow, and yes, at times it feels like it’s been built one pixel at a time (pun 100% intended). But honestly, how do you write a deep, meaningful narrative out of a game where most of the lore comes from fan theories and memes?

That said, the story does manage to bring heart, action, and enough blocks flying through the air to make your 8-year-old’s head spin with excitement.

Fans, Rejoice: This One’s for You

Let’s just take a moment to thank the Minecraft gods (aka Mojang and whoever in the writer’s room brought snacks) for making this film feel like a genuine love letter to the fans. It’s packed, and we mean packed, with Easter eggs, inside jokes, and community nods that only true fans will catch. Like, blink and you’ll miss someone speedrunning a crafting table or the King himself.

It’s obvious the filmmakers didn’t just Google “what is Minecraft” and call it a day. They care, people. And it shows.

Watching the Minecraft Movie in a theater filled to the brim with excited fans? That made the whole thing even better.

Yes, they screamed “CHICKEN JOCKEY!” at full volume (Ethan included). Yes, the crowd collectively made villager “hrmmm” noises multiple times. And weirdly? It didn’t ruin the experience. It amplified it. Like watching a movie.

It’s an over-all beauty

Jack Black = National Treasure (Again)

Can we just say it? Jack Black might secretly be Minecraft Steve at this point. He brings that wild, slightly chaotic energy fans love — and honestly, he’s one of the reasons this movie works as well as it does. Between his comedic timing, fan shoutouts, and clear “I actually love this game” vibes, Jack Black proves once again that he’s the GOAT of geeky greatness.

“Will my kids like it?” Short answer: yes. Longer answer: YES, especially if they’ve ever touched a tablet, heard of YouTube, or yelled “Creeper, AWWW MAN” unironically.

Kids under 8 might not get every joke (and some of the pacing might lose them), but there’s enough visual chaos, goofy moments, and cube-based explosions to keep them entertained. Just be ready for the instant post-movie request to “go home and play Minecraft for three hours, pleeeeease.”

Final Verdict

Here’s the verdict:

  • If you’re a fan: 10/10. This is your cinematic diamond sword.

  • If you’re not a fan: Still a solid 8/10 — surprisingly fun and way more charming than it has any right to be.

  • For kids under 8: 7/10. Some moments may fly over their heads, but they’ll still leave the theater smiling (and plotting their next build).

So yeah. It’s a movie based on a game with no plot, no characters, and no end… and somehow? It works. Go figure.
